Merced is a city in, as well as the county seat of, Merced County in California. The city is located in the San Joaquin Valley, and is often referred to as the “Gateway to Yosemite”, due to its close proximity to Yosemite National Park, and is bordered by Monterey Bay and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Merced is a charter city, and operates with a council-manager government. The city derives its name from the nearby Merced River.
The People of Merced
Merced is a medium-sized city that includes approximately 23.16 square miles and upwards of 81,000 people. Roughly half of its residents are female, and its median resident age is significantly younger than the state trend at 28.3 years. The city has almost 27,500 households – an estimated 3.2 persons per household – and a median household income that is significantly below the state median at $37,822.
Merced became home to University of California, Merced in 2005, and the University remains a key force in the local economy today. Another major factor in the local economy are Merced County’s local operations, which employ a number of residents in the county seat. Merced’s residents are, in turn, primarily employed in office and administrative positions, as well as teaching and other educational roles.
Most of the town’s key occupations are a blend of white and blue-collar professions, therefore the city is known for its mixed workforce.
Although Merced’s residents and workforce are made up of a largely younger population, the city and its surrounding areas experience family legal matters, such as divorce, as any other community does.
The process of divorce can often be quite simple. However, in situations where a couple fails to agree, such as when dividing valuable shared assets, it becomes a more highly contended, complex issue. While not all divorce settlements require drawn-out legal proceedings, divorcing couples that are dealing with separating valuable assets such as a property or business may find it more difficult to reach an agreement regarding issues such as business valuation, securities or spousal maintenance.
